There are two main standardized tests for pencil hardness: ASTM D3363 and JIS K-5600-5-4 Before starting、 you will need the following instruments:
1. Pencil hardness tester (ASTM D3363 does allow manual testing without the need for a holder、 but to achieve good and consistent results、 you should use a pencil hardness tester)
2. Pencil set designed specifically for pencil hardness testing
3. 400 grit sandpaper
4. Pencil sharpener
5. 90 ° tool
6. Glass plate testing surface
First、 Place the film to be tested on the test surface of the glass plate. Then、 you need to run in the appropriate hardness pencil for testing. Sharpen the pencil、 then load it into a 90 ° tool and place it on 400 grit sandpaper to resurface the pen. Install the pencil with an appropriate weighted gram load on the pencil hardness tester (note: this depends on the test you are conducting. Various weights can be used for each test. The weights used must be defined in the results). A 45 ° angle allows the pencil to gently land on the surface of the film sample. Push the tester forward ½”。 Rotate the pencil 90 ° until the unused edge、 then parallel to the first pencil and at least apart ½” Repeat the test Check these two strokes to determine if the surface of the coated sample has been scratched by the lead wire. If both strokes have not scratched the surface、 the film passes. If one or two strokes scratch the film、 the test fails. Repeat the test with different pencils until it fails to see the highest pencil hardness that the film has passed
